My name is Robin, I am 25 years old and one of the three Glocal Sports founders. Since age eleven, I played soccer in a German youth league while in high school. My free time was dedicated to my dream of becoming a professional soccer player, which is why I hardly had time for friends and other activities. At Borussia Mönchengladbach, I played as a core player in the UEFA Youth League and was closer than ever to my goal shortly after graduating from high school in 2015. But then, a serious knee injury ended my dreams and resulted in me not getting my contract renewed and becoming clubless. While I didn’t receive any offers from German clubs, a short time later, however, I received a request from the University of Virginia, which offered me a full scholarship to become a player on the university’s soccer team, which would be the start of my journey in the US.
In four years, I was selected as one of the student athletes with Outstanding Academic Achievement several times and represented the soccer team in games across the country as a captain. In 2019, I led the team to the national championship finals and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Global Development Studies before being selected by the Colorado Rapids in the 2020 MLS draft. The experiences of my time in the U.S. can be traced in several reports, videos and podcasts (including Der Spiegel, WDR, Sportschau).
Meanwhile, I live back in Germany and continue to play soccer in the regional league, while also attending a master’s degree program at a German university, which I expect to complete in March 2023.
It is important to me to give other young people the opportunity to follow the path I have chosen, because I know that going to the US was the best decision of my life. We at Glocal Sports, want to support you in getting that opportunity.
