What motivates us
Many young athletes in Germany don’t know what opportunities are available to them, even if they don’t perform at the highest level or graduate from high school with an Abitur.
Therefore, we are certain that many are not aware of the alternative possibility of an athletic scholarship in the US. It is important to us to help you learn about your options and to assist you in taking advantage of these opportunities.
Our team
Robin
I'm Robin, 27 years old and one of the three founders of Glocal Sports. I have been playing soccer at a German youth academy since I was eleven years old and was also a student at a grammar school. I played in the UEFA Youth League with Borussia Mönchengladbach in my final year of youth football and was closer than ever to my goal shortly after graduating from high school in 2015. But then a serious knee injury put an end to my dreams and meant that I didn't get a new contract and was without a club. While I didn't receive any offers from German clubs, a short time later I received a request from the University of Virginia, who offered me a full scholarship to become a player for the university's soccer team, which would be the beginning of my journey in the USA.
In four years, I was selected as one of the student athletes with Outstanding Academic Achievement several times and represented the soccer team in games across the country as a captain. In 2019, I led the team to the national championship finals and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Global Development Studies before being selected by the Colorado Rapids in the 2020 MLS draft. The experiences of my time in the U.S. can be traced in several reports, videos and podcasts (including Der Spiegel, WDR, Sportschau).
I now live in Germany again and play professional soccer for S.C. Fortuna Köln, having previously achieved promotion to the 3rd division with Alemannia Aachen. I also decided to start a Master's degree course at a German university, which I successfully completed in May 2024.
It is important to me to give other young people the opportunity to follow the path I have chosen, because I know that going to the US was the best decision of my life. We at Glocal Sports, want to support you in getting that opportunity.
Further support
Robin is supported by his two siblings. Both were able to follow Robin's career and therefore directly experience what kind of support helped him particularly and what he was missing at the time. We would like to use this experience to provide you with the best possible individual support, especially before and during your time in the USA, both from Germany and locally.
